And Furthermore - Just a sampling of Joyce’s Information:
Speech and Language Development – – Herzog provides a chart of normal development – from early months to 7 1/2 years old. With stuttering she encourages, among other things, “Do not demand speech in tense or hurried situations.” (p. 168-169)
Individualized Education Plan – For her readers whose child has or has had and IEP, she outlines the parts of the IEP. Further, she provides an outline for the parent to prepare for home education purposes: Two main categories: long term goals and specific objectives.
o Luke 2:52 “And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.”
o Using Luke 2:52 fill in the following for both long term goals and specific objectives: wisdom, stature, favor with God and favor with man – covering Bible knowledge, biblical principles and academics; health, hygiene, physical; personal relationship, daily quiet time, witnessing, service; home skills leisure skills, job (p. 172-175)
Depression: Causes and Cures “Depression is a little like quicksand. It catches us unawares and drags us down. It can best be conquered with a good calm plan of escape made in advance.” (p. 178) Herzog uses pages 178 -185 listing 17 potential causes of depression with a cure. Here are two examples:
o Physical, Mental or Emotional Exhaustion – Elijah (I Kings 18:21-19:8) “He was exhausted! Solution? Sleep! Right Food! Corrected Thinking!” (p. 178)
o Overwhelmed by Circumstances – “Cure: Make a priority list of things you do have control over and begin to conquer one thing at a time.” (p. 179)
o Other Good Practices for Mental Health (p. 186-188) – 13 Tips including: Have a Friend and Be a Friend; Take regular Mini-vacations ( a moment, an hour, a day, a weekend). She completes her list with “Remember: Depression is the body’s way of saying something is wrong, like a red warning light. Figure out what it is and deal with it.” (p. 188)
